What to expect

What happens in a session?

SessionThe treatment itself takes place on a massage couch, largely facing upwards with your knees supported (though you might be asked to move onto your side) and covered with a blanket. If you have a back problem do insist on a good high cushion under the legs so the lower back can release in comfort.

Your practitioner will perhaps hold your feet, your head or place a hand under the sacrum. Other specific areas may also be lightly touched during the session.

The practitioner’s task is to create a safe holding environment so that you can really relax and settle deeply into stillness. Michael Shea, a leading US craniosacral practitioner, has observed this holding field to be a recreation of the resonance a mother has naturally with her unborn child, linked as she is heart to heart through their connected circulatory and respiratory mechanisms. Without judging and accepting whatever may arise, the practitioner listens and waits for the wisdom of the body to make its intentions clear. As the natural tides and rhythms emerge (our bodies are approximately between 55% (women) and 60% (men) composed of water) one or more areas of holding may be revealed and encouraged to release.

During the session you may or may not have bodily sensations, see images or remember incidents from the past.

Key to the work is the relationship with your practitioner. This may take several sessions to establish, allowing you to trust and drop down into deeper levels of stillness and relaxation. Some clients use sessions for purely physical complaints such as migraines, others see the freeing up of emotional and mental stuckness (perhaps reflected in physical pain or as repetitive behaviours) as part of their self-development.

What should I do after treatment?

cst post care treatmentDon’t rush - take things easy. Let the body stay relaxed for as long as possible so that you derive maximum benefit. Since the treatment also frees up toxins and releases them into the system, it is recommended that you drink several glasses of plain water after the session to flush these out. Very occasionally you might feel quite tired after your session. Rest if you can. This is usually quite temporary. If you do have any concerns do not hesitate to contact me.

Observe how differently you feel. It may be slight, the sensation may be physical (reduction in pain, relaxed), emotional (calmer, more confident), mental (less confused, more aware), or spiritual (happy, open, trusting). Whatever it is just observe and consciously take note. It is important to register such changes and assimilate them so they become naturally expressed within your body and your everyday awareness. This is all part of looking after yourself.

This is difficult to gauge but I would suggest that you consider four sessions as a start to deal with a specific problem and evaluate how you feel after the final appointment. Sometimes it may take time for you to settle, particularly when there is trauma. You may also want to have sessions on a regular basis as part of your self-development or during a particularly difficult time in your life.

As Dr Rollin E. Becker, D.O., a colleague of Sutherland’s, declared:
Every tissue in the body automatically wants, to get well, if you give it half a chance.
